Backstreet Boys And Carson Daly reunite to remember 'TRL' ‎

Looks like VH1 will be bringing MTV's "TRL" back to life once again. This time, however, it will be in an hour-long documentary on the iconic music and pop culture series.

The Emmy-nominated docu-series, "Rock Docs," will have an episode dedicated to "TRL" in its upcoming season featuring an interview with the original VJ himself, Carson Daly.

"Sitting down with @vh1 for the 1st official TRL doc," Daly tweets. "Memory lane here I come.....any must mention moments?"

It appears that the VJ needs a little help remembering what actually happened.

"I forgot how many times I was drunk from 98-03." He adds "Wowzers- this is fun."

Perhaps the Backstreet Boys can help him with his recall. They, too, will be featured in the documentary. The boy band has had their fair share of memorable moments on the show. Back in 2001, they took to the Times Square studio to share with fans that member, A.J. McLean, had entered rehab in the midst of their sold-out "Black & Blue" tour.

The "TRL" episode of "Rock Docs" is set to premiere in 2012. Now, tell us, what are some of your favorite "TRL" memories?

Boyz II Men Surprises Fans At NKOTBSB Concert In Orlando And The Crowd Goes Wild!

New Kids On The Block and Back Street Boys got an evening of a lifetime when Boyz II Men took the stage and performed hits like ‘Motown Philly!

You must be totally jealous right now, because we are! Boyz II Men shocked thousands of diehard fans at the NKOTBSB concert on July 22 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fl. The group who reached mega-fame in the early 90s took the stage with New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys at their concert and the audience went nuts!

All the boy bands sang Boys II Men hits like “Motown Philly,” “I’ll Make Love To You,” and “End of the Road.” The only thing that would have made that night more epic would be if *NSYNC had taken the stage!

Flame still burns for Backstreet Boys 11 years later

A small, "Baked Apple Pie"-scented candle serves as a trophy from Jessica Guldner's adolescent brush with the Backstreet Boys.

Guldner and friend Sasha McAtee, then classmates at Creston Middle School in Warren Township, spent the afternoon of March 10, 2000, waiting at the entrance to Conseco Fieldhouse's underground garage.

The Backstreet Boys were in town for two sold-out shows at the arena, and Guldner and McAtee hoped for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of A.J. McLean, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson or Howie Dorough. Especially McLean, as the 13-year-old girls wore customized "I-heart-A.J." hats.

While McLean may or may not have waved from a passing bus, Guldner scored a tangible souvenir when a member of the Backstreet road crew gave her the candle -- allegedly swiped from a singer's bus.

"I don't know whose bus it was on, but it was enough to make me happy that day," said Guldner, now 24.

She's attended six Backstreet concerts, from a 1998 date at the Murat Theatre to a 2008 comeback show at the Indiana State Fair.

Fortysomething boy bands have aged well with fans

The Columbus Dispatch

To be a New Kid on the Block - or a Backstreet Boy, for that matter - in 2011 requires a certain indifference to social and sartorial norms that would typically recede with time and age:

Safe, synchronized dance moves.

Semi-formalwear awash in sequins.

Startling bursts of pyrotechnics, steam and confetti.

Gratuitous crotch-grabbing.

But a female-heavy crowd squealingly embraced such tactics last night when the two boy bands joined forces for a two-hour-plus show that took nostalgia-hungry listeners - depending on the performers - back 10 years (the Backstreet Boys, which formed in Orlando, Fla., in the early 1990s) or two decades (the Boston-based New Kids were first assembled in 1984).

"It feels a lot like 1989 again," New Kids vocalist Joey McIntyre told a packed Value City Arena last night. "No matter what beautiful, time-traveling journey we're on, we don't intend for it to stop."

NKOTBSB brings the 90's back to Greensboro

If you are a female over the age of twenty, you have most likely heard of the New Kids on the Block, or the Backstreet Boys. These two boy bands have been melting the hearts of fans since 1989 and 1993, and have sold millions of CD's as well. Recently, these two groups have joined forces, creating NKOTBSB who stopped in Greensboro NC Saturday night, leaving fans reliving their teen years as well as proving that some bands just get better with age.

These bands were in their heyday at two completely different times, therefore, it is a wonder that they had the idea to come together. It all began when the Backstreet Boys(BSB) surprised the New Kids on the Block(NKOTB) at one of their concerts in 2010 that the idea of NKOTBSB came about. There was such a good reaction from the crowd that the groups continued to talk about doing a joint project together. In August 2010, it was officially announced that BSB and NKOTB would tour together as NKOTBSB, leaving fans anxious and excited to see their favorite childhood bands again on one stage.

Boy bands reunite to set female hearts aflutter again

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Nearly three decades ago, a novelty pop act of five boys started out playing to sparse crowds in New England shopping malls and ended up as a global force selling 70 million records and paving the way for scads of copycat "boy bands."

During their heyday, the New Kids on the Block enjoyed prime placement on 1980s MTV, neon-splashed magazines and even commemorative pillowcases. Their vocal chops, upbeat songs and ever-so-slightly edgy personas were a given.

Dreamy looks and rhinestone-studded denim? Like, duh, totally, you guys!

Joey McIntyre, now 38 but still the youngest member of the reunited quintet, harbors a different theory for the group's success.

"I think being from Boston comes to mind," said McIntyre, a native of the suburb of Needham, Mass. "For better or for worse, there's a lot of character that comes out of that city - a lot of attitude, a sense of what's right and what's wrong, taking care of one's own.

"Maybe it would have worked if we were from Columbus, Ohio."

But Beantown was where the local youths auditioned in 1984 for producer Maurice Starr, who had previously assembled the Boston urban-pop act New Edition.

New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys (aka NKOTBSB): Like fine wines and cheeses, boy bands age better with time

by Emily Sales

Last night at the KFC Yum! Center, the musical powerhouses of the New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys (aka NKOTBSB) crooned, winked, gyrated and grabbed their crotches to delight of throngs of screaming girls. If ever there was a concert that summed up my adolescence...this was it! I even once had a tear-stained Donnie Wahlberg pillowcase to prove my pubescent allegiance to the New Kids. So, can the boys still sing and dance? Allow me to answer that question with one unequivocally, girly shriek: YES!!!!

Despite the foreboding Groupon deal offering half-off tickets (or perhaps because of it) there was a decent sized crowd at the Yum! Center. I was expecting a stadium full of women my age, making the woeful march towards middle age. Surprisingly, the bulk of the concert attendees were young girls in their late teens and early twenties dressed up in strange rendition of what they thought was 80's fashion.

The evening kicked off with the opening act of Matthew Morrison from the Fox hit-show, Glee. Mr. Schue did a strange assortment of covers performed on the show as well as some original songs. The crowd at the Yum! Center seemed to really enjoy his rendition of Kanye West's “Gold Digger,” but I was underwhelmed. There was something really disturbing about an obvious musical theater-geek, (I can smell my own, people) singing the lyrics: “she ain't messin' wit no broke !@#$%^'.” On the other extreme, Morrison's own songs were sappy and somewhat trite. His whole act just reeked of a cruise ship.

Screaming women! Spilled beer! Lost lip gloss! New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys drive 'em wild at The Q

Washington, D.C., could learn a thing or two from these guys.

When New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys teamed up for a nostalgic double bill Wednesday evening at The Q in Cleveland, it was a historic display of boy-band bipartisanship.

Each group favored a different approach to dealing with the impending national heartbreak crisis. Of course, the fact that there even is an impending national heartbreak crisis was news to some of us.

New Kids on the Block came out in support of austere measures -- i.e., “Hangin’ Tough.” Backstreet Boys came out in support of transparency -- i.e., “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart).”

Yet in the end, both parties agreed to put aside their profound philosophical differences in favor of dancing the night away, to the delight of 12,000 supporters.

Brian Littrell of Backstreet Boys talks about the band, fans and rivals

Brian Littrell, member of the Backstreet Boys and heartthrob at large, is making his way to Hershey. The same man whose faced grinned from posters on bedroom walls and covers of teen magazines has joined up with his band mates and New Kids on the Block for a concert tour that makes every boy-band fan's dream come true. Their next destination? Hersheypark Stadium Saturday.

Even if the name Backstreet Boys sounds foreign, chances are you know their music. The group shot to fame in the late 90s with hits like “Quit Playing Games With My Heart,” and “I Want It That Way.” Six of the group's albums have been in the Billboard 200 Top 10. It has recorded numerous hit songs and has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards.

When BSB's first U.S. album debuted in 1997, Littrell’s photo made elementary students squeal. Now, 14 years later, those same kids are adults — and many have kept on screaming.

The band has done a fair bit of growing as well. Their music has changed from standard boy band pop to acoustic rock to dance and they lost a member, Kevin Richardson. Littrell has shed his nickname “B-Rock,” in favor of his first name. “I’ve kinda out grown that phase,” he says.

“I got that title growing up as a Backstreet Boy, being a young man,” he says. “That’s not really my title now. I’m a grown man, husband, father.”

Review: Boy bands show a touch of humility

The oldest trick in a heartthrob's book -- pull a girl out of the audience for a one-on-one serenade -- crystallized the appeal of Tuesday night's New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys concert at Conseco Fieldhouse.

A 20-something fan named Paige served as proxy for nearly everyone in the estimated audience of 13,000 when Backstreet's Nick Carter applied his Casanova moves during a rendition of "I'll Never Break Your Heart."

He locked eyes at close range, writhed on the floor and repeatedly teased Paige with a single rose before surrendering the prize. She more or less hyperventilated.

Carter and fellow vocalists on the dual tour billed as "NKOTBSB" brought dimensions of gratitude and humility not readily apparent when New Kids thrived as a money machine in the late-'80s and Backstreet stormed the international scene a few years later.

"NKOTBSB" is still a major production, with the best seats selling for $91.50 each. A catwalk stretched from one end of the arena to the other, allowing close-up views for fans as the singers walked back and forth.

NKOTBSB at Staples Center: Concert Review

The combined supergroup featuring New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys took concertgoers back in time with a highly energetic and entertaining show.

Barely a tween was to be found at the concert headlined by boy-band supergroup NKOTBSB on Friday night, but you’d hardly know it from the deafening screams inside the packed Staples Center in Los Angeles.

While the fans may have gotten older, it seems their appreciation for late-‘80s /early-‘90s hitmakers New Kids on the Block and late-‘90s/early-2000s mega-sellers Backstreet Boys hasn’t diminished. (It’s likely that the mostly twenty- and thirtysomething female audience -- who stood pretty much during the entire 2 1/2-hour show -- was comprised nearly entirely of fans who had grown up with one of the bands, and this probably wasn’t their first time seeing them in person based on the vintage concert tees some sported.)

But from the start, NKOTB and BSB came out to entertain, and the audience didn’t leave disappointed. Sure, the costumes may be less flashy, the hair a little thinner and the voices a bit lower -- the Kids and Boys are now in their thirties and forties -- but inside Staples Center, fans were transported back in time. The groups knew what the fans wanted -- hit songs, flashes of skin and some well-choreographed dance moves -- and they more than delivered.

Kevin Richardson joins Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block in Los Angeles

Stuff like this really makes us wish we still had a Lisa Frank Trapper-Keeper on which to scribble "I HEART BSB." It's often the only way to adequately describe our emotions.

Kevin Richardson, who left the Backstreet Boys amicably in 2006, got back together with his old buddies (and some new kids) for the July 1st Los Angeles stop of the enormous NKOTBSB tour at the Staples Center.

Richardson and the rest of the Backstreet Boys wore Lakers' jerseys, while the New Kids on the Block kept their Boston pride going with Celtics jerseys. Richardson joined former bandmates Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, A.J. McLean, and Howie Dorough on "I Want It That Way" and even participated in the big NKOTBSB finale.

Richardson jumped on Twitter for the first time since April after the show. "Beautiful night with my brothas on stage in LA," he wrote. "Much respect and love for the NKOTB. Thanks for making me feel welcome."

Richardson recently won an Independent Vision Award for Best Actor, for his role in "The Casserole Club," an indie film about a group of competitive 1960s housewives.

Backstreet Boys tunes could feature on Glee

Holders of Glee Live! tickets might be interested to hear that the hit television series could soon feature the music of one of the most successful boy bands of the 1990s.

Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys has revealed that the group would be more than happy for some of their songs to be used on the show.

Previously, the cast of Glee have performed their own versions of hits originally recorded by the likes of Madonna, Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

Asked how the group would feel about their music receiving the Glee treatment, Carter told Hollywood Scoop: "It's an amazing show. Of course we would do it."

Other acts have not been so amenable, with Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon and Red Hot Chili Peppers all turning down requests for their songs to feature in the series.

Glee Live! will be wowing fans at London's O2 Arena for the next three nights, running until June 30th.

Review: New Kids, Backstreet Boys shine in San Jose

Lisa Picazo bought more than a ticket to a concert. The 43-year-old San Jose resident purchased transport on a de facto time machine, one that took her straight back to her high school years and memories of doing cheerleading routines to New Kids on the Block songs.

Then the houselights dimmed and the spotlights hit the stage, revealing the actual New Kids -- no longer "New," nor "Kids" -- on Saturday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. And the time machine was really off and running.

"We're cheerleaders again!" exclaimed Picazo, who was attending the show with her 39-year-old friend Tami Paez of San Jose.

Is 'Glee' In NKOTBSB's Future?

By Jocelyn Vena (@)

After a full show dedicated to their pop contemporary Britney Spears, NKOTBSB's music (or their individual songs as New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys) seems like a perfect fit for "Glee." And considering that "Glee" star Matthew Morrison will be joining the boy-band supergroup on tour later this summer, perhaps now is the right time to get some of their classic pop tunes on the hit Fox show.

"I think it would be probably flattering to be on 'Glee,' but there seems to be like a rush of pop stars who are just stumbling over themselves to be on 'Glee,' " New Kids' Donnie Wahlberg told MTV News backstage at the Izod Center before they took the stage later that night.

He added that it would have to be the perfect scenario to make it all work out for the guys. "I think if we found a way, collectively, it would be wonderful. It would be a treat, an honor," he said. "It would be wonderful for a lot of our fans. I think we're so focused on the tour ... it would be a wonderful treat, but we're doing this."

While the fate of their music on the show is open to debate, Backstreet Boys' Brian Littrell seemed pretty open to putting his acting chops to work instead. He even had a character in mind should a cameo scenario work itself out. "I'm a character. I'll play anybody," he said. "I'll play the shady-looking youth minister. Coming from the Bible Belt, it's creepy."

Older kids on the block still got it

By Tenley Woodman

The NKOTBSB tour is proof that teen idols may age, but good pop songs never do.

And that two boy bands — actually, make that man bands — are better than one.

A capacity crowd soaked up the combined charms of Boston’s own New Kids on the Block and the Florida-formed Backstreet Boys at the TD Garden last night.

The two-hour show was packed with hits, from the ballads — New Kids’ “Please Don’t Go Girl” and Backstreet’s “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” — to the dance-worthy — “Step by Step” and “Larger Than Life.”

The Word: NKOTBSB still have the right stuff

DOROTHY ROBINSON
NEW YORK

New Kids On The Block & Backstreet Boys — aka NKOTBSB — performed in coordinated military jackets (the Army of Boy Bands Past, apparently) in front of thousands of screaming, female fans on Thursday night at their sold-out performance at Mohegan Sun Arena. But before they took the stage, a goateed Donnie Wahlberg admitted that he isn’t a fan of one of his group’s biggest hits. Put him on the stage, however, and it’s a different story.

“‘The Right Stuff’ is always my favorite to perform, which is ironic because I hate the song,” he admits. “It’s not a good song to me, it never was, but every night when we do it on the stage, the building shakes — every person in the building jumps up and down,” he says. “Even like Backstreet fans who don’t even know us, they know that song and it’s the most fun to perform. [I] don’t like it, but love to perform it.”

NKOTBSB are aware they’ve grown out of the teen-idol phase of their lives (but maybe their fans haven’t, as they snatched up the bubblegum-flavored drinks and cupcakes the casino was offering) and Wahlberg was keen to give some serious props to the man, the myth, the legend: the Biebs.

“Justin Bieber’s pretty incredible,” he admits. “I like seeing young kids do well. I think he’s a good example of a very talented kid finding his way. He’s talented, and he works hard and he has a gift. It’s nice to see people who work hard accomplish things. Better him than some random kid who stumbled into a pot of gold.”

NKOTBSB: New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys bring it to Boston

Proving that they are as youthful and energetic as ever, New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys brought their hybrid tour to Boston, MA last night. The aging pop stars might be a few years removed from their boy band status, but they still sold out the TD Garden on Saturday, June 4, 2011.

New Kids on the Block always receives a warm welcome in Boston. After all, it is their hometown; and Donnie Wahlberg is like royalty around here. Local fans who missed NKOTBSB at TD Garden can still catch the nine member super-band when they play Fenway Park on Saturday, June 11, 2011.

Jordin Sparks showed off her newly fit toned body and her vocal skills as NKOTBSB's opening act. According to the Boston Herald, Sparks's track list included “Battlefield” and “I am Woman”; while NKOTBSB thrilled the crowd with “Don’t Turn the Lights Out,” “Larger Than Life,” “Step by Step,” “I’ll Never Break Your Heart,” and “Please Don’t Go Girl," among other favorites.

Wonder what the guys will be doing in the week between their Boston performances. Maybe the locals will spot the boys taking in a show or eating at the Hard Rock Cafe. One can always dream. Until then, you can check out video of NKOTBSB in Boston at the left side of the page.

New Kids, Backstreet Boys turn back clocks, send hearts racing

By James Reed
Globe Staff / June 5, 2011

Not much has changed, really. The female screams could still crack a glass. The choreography was synchronized, sometimes in slow motion. And nearly every song was a singalong.

And if you looked past their tattoos and the wedding bands on their fingers, it was an incredible moment to behold: Long after their respective heydays, New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys can still scale the heights of their boy-band glory days.

At least that was what happened last night at the TD Garden, where a sold-out crowd of more than 13,000 shrieking fans made it clear that nostalgia still sells quite well. (The show comes to Fenway Park on Saturday.)

The Boys (and the New Kids) are back!

Bands retain original fans, and gain new ones, as they launch new tour

As the father of three daughters raised in the heyday of the New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys, Gordon Thompson knows a bit more about the magnetic appeal of boy bands than the average academic.
His girls dragged him to concerts — and he loved it.

“As a parent, it was kind of fun,” said Thompson, a music professor at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and author of “Please Please Me: Sixties British Pop, Inside Out.”

“It was a scream fest. As anybody with teenage daughters knows, they can be absolutely addicted to things. But I have to admit, (the groups) put on a pretty good show.”

Where the Boys Are: New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys at Verizon Center

They say that time waits for no boy band. This Friday, New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys bring the sugary-sweet soundtrack of your adolescence back to the Verizon Center's stage — and with it, a reminder of just how much has changed since you got your learner's permit. Whether you survived the late-'80s outbreak of NKOTB fever or succumbed to the late-'90s siren song of the Backstreet Boys, we have all the hot updates on America's favorite former future husbands.
BACKSTREET BOYS
» A.J. McLean
McLean checked into rehab in 2001 and 2002, and was treated for depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse, according to Rollingstone.com. He checked back in last year, saying he wanted to "be healthy and at my best" before the BSBNKOTB tour.
» Howie Dorough
Then
: The overlooked one
Now: The regular guy
» Brian Littrell
Then
: The one with highlights
Now: The Christian recording artist
» Nick Carter
When McLean checked into rehab in 2001, a choked-up Carter told MTV.com, "I don't think there is an end to this group until one of us dies." Carter has since dropped a solo album, "Now or Never," and starred in "House of Carters" on E! with younger brother, Aaron.

Nick Carter loves looking youthful

Nick Carter insists he looks younger than his friends because of his exciting childhood.

The 31-year-old is best known as one of the lead vocalists of pop group Backstreet Boys. Nick, who went on to release a solo album called Now Or Never during the band’s hiatus, says that despite doubting his music career during his younger years, he now appreciates the positive effect it had on his life.

"I used to have that feeling [of missing out on a childhood]. I used to live in the past, trying to figure out who I was. I regretted things. My friends went to high school and had their proms and everything, whereas I only came home for a short time and then had to fly off again. I used to be a kind of a roving soul,” he explained in an interview with German website unikosmos.de. “But when I look back I can see how happy I am. All my friends look older than me and are not as healthy as I am. Plus I am urban because I have travelled the world. I like my life."

Review: NKOTBSB tour comes to Mohegan Sun

By REBEKAH MEYER

Whoever came up with the concept for the NKOTBSB tour must have loved the musical Chicago.

“One jazz killer is nothing these days, but two …”

That was the idea behind the cleverly monikered NKOTBSB tour, and boy, was it a good one. Each band — New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys, for those keeping track — has been making few waves within the last few years, but put them together and you have a girls' night waiting to happen.

The headliners started very late — 44 minutes after the second opener finished. But once they came out, all was forgotten. They appeared, appropriately, high atop a riser, looking down at an expanse of cheering fans.
It was an expertly calibrated show: a nonstop, 2 hour-15 minute killer, with very little downtime between songs and almost no banter. Even the ‘encore’ began less than two minutes after the last song ended, and there was recorded noise going on in the background.

New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys get screaming love from 7,000 women fans at Van Andel Arena

GRAND RAPIDS -- Somebody get a hose, because the 7,000-plus women gathered at the Van Andel Arena Thursday night were hot and bothered at the sight and sound of New Kids on the Block and The Backstreet Boys.

With an average age of about 35, the fans were clearly coming back in droves to see the boy bands whose faces they had plastered in their lockers and whose voices crooned to them at school dances and roller skating parties.

The screaming was like none other, a wall of sound that just intensified depending what was happening onstage, or who happened to be singing at that moment. Actor Donnie Wahlberg (“Blue Bloods”) of TV and movie fame seemed to get the most sugar out of the NKOTB; when he tugged off his tank top the whole place just about went up in flames. Joey McIntyre also fared well in the shrieking department, and fans dissolved when Jordan Knight showed off his still-supple falsetto on “Valentine Girl.”

NKOTBSB Tour Spoilers! The Setlist! Surprises! Yay!!!

All you people, can't you see, can't you see… NKOTBSB!!!

Last night, the biggest explosion of boy band fandom took off in Chicago as the New Kids On The Block and the Backstreet Boys kicked off their summer tour. (We wonder if they could hear the screaming down at the Chicago Theatre!)

Those who were lucky enough to attend were also kind enough to share some SPOILERS from the show that will leave fans still waiting for the boys to hit their town heaving with joy.

First, we'll tell you that the stage, which the fellas have dubbed "the penis stage" is set up to give everyone a perfect view. However, from what we're hearing, the Backstreet Boys seem to base camp at the "head", while the NKOTB mostly perform on the "shaft." LOLZ.

Then, during "Tonight" and "Shape Of My Heart," the boys take to the AUDIENCE and perform amongst their adoring fans. Oh, and if you're on the floor, don't think you are getting all the love. We hear most of the guys traveled up to the higher levels to say hello their fans! Such gentlemen!

And now, for the moment you've all been waiting for, we present to you… THE SETLIST!

Man of the Moment: Nick Carter

We realize boy band members can come in for some mockery. But the man in this picture isn’t just the seller of 130-plus million albums worldwide. He’s a re-engineered guy who in the past few years has hit the gym, dropped 65 pounds, and beaten Justin Timberlake in an arm-wrestling match. (He also dates a fit chick.) So the week his new solo album, I’m Taking Off, drops on iTunes, we talked with the 31-year-old about video games, hair care and how guys are suckers. Dude’s got some surprisingly good advice.

(OTCBB: PTEL), is pleased to announce today its first donation to Music for Relief to help the relief efforts in Japan. "It gives me great self satisfaction knowing we can help the disaster efforts in Japan," stated Anthony DiBiase, CEO of Encounter and Pegasus. "We can't wait to announce the final donation totals at the end of the Howie D contests with Howie and Music for Relief."

"We are excited to be the beneficiary of this ongoing campaign," commented Whitney Showler, Music for Relief. "It is great to see our industry colleagues, MusicMatrix.com and Howie D, working together to help those in need."

AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys wants you to know: ‘We are true artists’

In their heyday, they made millions off a song that rhymed “fire” with “desire.” Today they’re an ironic pick at karaoke bars and a nostalgia trip for women in their 20s and 30s. The Backstreet Boys are slightly washed-up singers dealing with receding hairlines, children and rehab. They’ve never done a reunion tour because they never stopped making music (yup, they released four albums after 1999’s Millennium). This summer, the group teams up with New Kids on the Block to tour as NKOTBSB. The superboyband’s album (a compilation of classics and two new recordings) hits stores on Tuesday.

While preparing for the tour in Los Angeles, Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean spoke to The Globe and Mail by phone. The tour ends Aug. 7 in London, Ont. .

How are you doing?
I'm good. I'm sitting on a big orange ball in my underwear.

Is that the outfit you usually have for interviews?
I was in the middle of changing because we were doing our fittings for the show and they were rushing me out to get to the phone so I was like, “Can I put pants on?” And they're like “No, just go ahead.” I’m like, alright fine. I'm an exhibitionist. I'll walk around the whole office in my underwear, no problem.

Backstreet Boys go vegetarian

Members of the famous pop group reveal that they've dropped the meat from their new tour to stay healthy.

For their new tour with New Kids on the Block, the Backstreet Boys have decided to drop the meat and focus on staying healthy.

“We’re getting a lot of rest and have switched over to a vegetarian diet. I’m trying to get my brain clear and ready for everything that’s to come,” Nick Carter told Celebuzz.com. “I downloaded a meditation book. I like to relax and meditate. I think they’re important because I have so much going on, and if I don’t find peace within it all, it could be dangerous for your health.”

Such consideration for well-being is a nice flip from the group's tour demands back in the '90s, which included requests for hamburgers, French dips, hot turkey, Sloppy Joe’s and tacos.

The two boy bands decided to join forces after Backstreet performed last summer during a NKOTB gig at Radio City Music Hall in NYC.

We were all on tour, not together at the same time, but we were pretty close on the road," said Donnie Wahlberg. "NKOTB were wrapping up their summer run. We happened to be out and we ended up being on stage together. It was a magical moment [...] none of us will never forget. Right after we performed together everybody on Twitter and Facebook ...i t was everywhere that we were going on tour. So we started talking about it and we made it happen."

The 53-show tour, which also includes "Glee" star Matthew Morrison as an opening act, kicks off this Wednesday in Rosemont, Ill. Check out a video below of the two groups performing on a recent episode of "Dancing with the Stars."

Interview: Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean on growing (and sobering) up, touring with NKOTB

By Erik Maza, The Baltimore Sun

May 26, 2011

Hard as it is to believe, it's been a whopping 26 years since the New Kids on the Block released their first single. For the Backstreet Boys, it's been 16.

New Kid Donnie Wahlberg was a spry 17 back then; so was the Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean.

A lot has happened since then. They've grown up, for one.

"Some of the New Kids have kids of their own," McLean said.

Wahlberg and McLean are even members of the same country club in California. Along the way, McLean checked in and out of rehab, and Jordan Knight came out of the closet. They've gone from being the most popular boy group in the country to being has-beens and, eventually, nostalgia acts.

Nick Carter Is OK Being a Guilty Pleasure, Wants to Avoid Being a 'Savior' or 'Tragedy'

You may best remember Nick Carter as the fresh-faced, youngest member of the Backstreet Boys, but the now 31-year-old singer is back after nearly nine years with his sophomore solo effort 'I'm Taking Off', out May 24. His first, 2002's 'Now or Never,' is an album he looks back on now as a premature project. AOL Music recently caught up with the singer to talk about his battles with drug and alcohol addiction, and how after honing his craft as a musician, he is ready to shine with a "mature pop album."

Carter is gearing up for an epic summer tour with his Backstreet Boys and fellow boy band New Kids on the Block, but admits he had to go through a fit of rebellion before finally being able to embrace pop music again. In our interview, he reveals his biggest addiction of all, his feelings about a possible BSB episode of 'Glee,' and how he escaped becoming a child star "tragedy."

Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block bring boy-band mania to Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS — Brian Littrell of the Backstreet Boys is having trouble buying flooring at Home Depot.

“My wife and I just purchased a used Airstream trailer, and we’re redoing it,” he said, jovially, in a phone interview from a Home Depot store near his Atlanta home. He said this before the trouble started.

The 36-year-old member of the bestselling boy band of all time chats about life, family, faith and flooring as he roams the home improvement store, looking for the perfect surface material for his wife, Leighanne’s, “business mobile.”

“She started an at-home business a few years ago when she couldn’t find a cool diaper bag,” he said. “Now everywhere (the tour) goes, we bring the Airstream and have Wylee Bag parties in it.” (Wyleebags.com sells totes, purses, backpacks and more.)

Nick Carter Talks NKOTBSB Tour & How Matthew Morrison Came on Board

When news broke late last year that New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys would be joining forces to go a nationwide tour, ladies everywhere could barely contain their excitement! And although it’s been a long wait, the guys are finally ready to hit the road with their first show kicking off in Illinois on May 25.
Celebuzz has been excited about this for months, so we were thrilled when we got the chance to chat with Nick Carter about what to expect from the tour, his upcoming solo album (out May 25) and much more!

How excited are you for the upcoming tour?
It’s something so extraordinary. We were just at the practice facility yesterday and the stage is so large. It’s about 50 yards long, it’s crazy. When we do the choreography and run-through, we realize how big this is going to be.

What have you been doing to prepare for the tour?
I’ve been doing vocal rehearsals. We’ve all been coached. We’re also getting a lot of rest and have switched over to a vegetarian diet. I’m trying to get my brain clear and ready for everything that’s to come.

Matthew Morrison Announces He's Joining Backstreet Boys / New Kids Tour (VIDEO)

The season finale of 'Glee' is just a week away, and Matthew Morrison has a new album to promote. So Morrison announced today on 'Good Morning America' (weekdays, 7AM on ABC) that he will be joining the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block tour this summer "playing some arenas and stuff."

The ever-supportive Robin Roberts seemed flabbergasted. "That is awesome," she cooed. "That is going to be wicked cool. Thank you for sharing that with us. Wow. Our minds are racing right now."

Yes, teen idols of yesteryear paired with a singing-teacher phenom of today; it's a lot to digest. Now all 'Glee' needs to do is cover 'Backstreet's Back' and 'The Right Stuff' and we will have really bridged the great generational divide.

Backstreet Boys' A.J. McLean Pays Roughly 40K for Vampire Photo of Lindsay Lohan

Backstreet Boys member A.J. McLean has purchased a photo of a bloody-mouthed Lindsay Lohan straddling over ‘Vampire Diaries’ star Michael Trevino. The shot was taken by acclaimed photographer Tyler Shields.

McLean bought the photograph after attending Shields’ art exhibition in Los Angeles. “A.J. paid between $30,000 and $40,000 for the large print of Lindsay with Michael Trevino,” remarks Shields. “I was really thrilled with how the exhibition went and we sold a lot of my images on the night including one of Dianna Agron from ‘Glee,’ Emma Roberts and actors Spencer Falls and Sarah Carroll.”

The picture of Spencer Falls and Sarah Carroll was purchased by ‘Glee’ actress Jenna Ushkowitz for $50,000. “These young celebrities buy my work because it’s an investment,” explains Shields. “The value has increased considerably since I started taking them.”
