Is 'Glee' In NKOTBSB's Future?

By Jocelyn Vena (@)

After a full show dedicated to their pop contemporary Britney Spears, NKOTBSB's music (or their individual songs as New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys) seems like a perfect fit for "Glee." And considering that "Glee" star Matthew Morrison will be joining the boy-band supergroup on tour later this summer, perhaps now is the right time to get some of their classic pop tunes on the hit Fox show.

"I think it would be probably flattering to be on 'Glee,' but there seems to be like a rush of pop stars who are just stumbling over themselves to be on 'Glee,' " New Kids' Donnie Wahlberg told MTV News backstage at the Izod Center before they took the stage later that night.

He added that it would have to be the perfect scenario to make it all work out for the guys. "I think if we found a way, collectively, it would be wonderful. It would be a treat, an honor," he said. "It would be wonderful for a lot of our fans. I think we're so focused on the tour ... it would be a wonderful treat, but we're doing this."

While the fate of their music on the show is open to debate, Backstreet Boys' Brian Littrell seemed pretty open to putting his acting chops to work instead. He even had a character in mind should a cameo scenario work itself out. "I'm a character. I'll play anybody," he said. "I'll play the shady-looking youth minister. Coming from the Bible Belt, it's creepy."

Older kids on the block still got it

By Tenley Woodman

The NKOTBSB tour is proof that teen idols may age, but good pop songs never do.

And that two boy bands — actually, make that man bands — are better than one.

A capacity crowd soaked up the combined charms of Boston’s own New Kids on the Block and the Florida-formed Backstreet Boys at the TD Garden last night.

The two-hour show was packed with hits, from the ballads — New Kids’ “Please Don’t Go Girl” and Backstreet’s “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” — to the dance-worthy — “Step by Step” and “Larger Than Life.”

The Word: NKOTBSB still have the right stuff

DOROTHY ROBINSON

New Kids On The Block & Backstreet Boys — aka NKOTBSB — performed in coordinated military jackets (the Army of Boy Bands Past, apparently) in front of thousands of screaming, female fans on Thursday night at their sold-out performance at Mohegan Sun Arena. But before they took the stage, a goateed Donnie Wahlberg admitted that he isn’t a fan of one of his group’s biggest hits. Put him on the stage, however, and it’s a different story.

“‘The Right Stuff’ is always my favorite to perform, which is ironic because I hate the song,” he admits. “It’s not a good song to me, it never was, but every night when we do it on the stage, the building shakes — every person in the building jumps up and down,” he says. “Even like Backstreet fans who don’t even know us, they know that song and it’s the most fun to perform. [I] don’t like it, but love to perform it.”

NKOTBSB are aware they’ve grown out of the teen-idol phase of their lives (but maybe their fans haven’t, as they snatched up the bubblegum-flavored drinks and cupcakes the casino was offering) and Wahlberg was keen to give some serious props to the man, the myth, the legend: the Biebs.

“Justin Bieber’s pretty incredible,” he admits. “I like seeing young kids do well. I think he’s a good example of a very talented kid finding his way. He’s talented, and he works hard and he has a gift. It’s nice to see people who work hard accomplish things. Better him than some random kid who stumbled into a pot of gold.”

NKOTBSB: New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys bring it to Boston

Proving that they are as youthful and energetic as ever, New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys brought their hybrid tour to Boston, MA last night. The aging pop stars might be a few years removed from their boy band status, but they still sold out the TD Garden on Saturday, June 4, 2011.

New Kids on the Block always receives a warm welcome in Boston. After all, it is their hometown; and Donnie Wahlberg is like royalty around here. Local fans who missed NKOTBSB at TD Garden can still catch the nine member super-band when they play Fenway Park on Saturday, June 11, 2011.

Jordin Sparks showed off her newly fit toned body and her vocal skills as NKOTBSB's opening act. According to the Boston Herald, Sparks's track list included “Battlefield” and “I am Woman”; while NKOTBSB thrilled the crowd with “Don’t Turn the Lights Out,” “Larger Than Life,” “Step by Step,” “I’ll Never Break Your Heart,” and “Please Don’t Go Girl," among other favorites.

Wonder what the guys will be doing in the week between their Boston performances. Maybe the locals will spot the boys taking in a show or eating at the Hard Rock Cafe. One can always dream. Until then, you can check out video of NKOTBSB in Boston at the left side of the page.

New Kids, Backstreet Boys turn back clocks, send hearts racing

By James Reed
Globe Staff / June 5, 2011

Not much has changed, really. The female screams could still crack a glass. The choreography was synchronized, sometimes in slow motion. And nearly every song was a singalong.

And if you looked past their tattoos and the wedding bands on their fingers, it was an incredible moment to behold: Long after their respective heydays, New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys can still scale the heights of their boy-band glory days.

At least that was what happened last night at the TD Garden, where a sold-out crowd of more than 13,000 shrieking fans made it clear that nostalgia still sells quite well. (The show comes to Fenway Park on Saturday.)

The Boys (and the New Kids) are back!

Bands retain original fans, and gain new ones, as they launch new tour

As the father of three daughters raised in the heyday of the New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys, Gordon Thompson knows a bit more about the magnetic appeal of boy bands than the average academic.
His girls dragged him to concerts — and he loved it.

“As a parent, it was kind of fun,” said Thompson, a music professor at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and author of “Please Please Me: Sixties British Pop, Inside Out.”

“It was a scream fest. As anybody with teenage daughters knows, they can be absolutely addicted to things. But I have to admit, (the groups) put on a pretty good show.”

Where the Boys Are: New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys at Verizon Center

They say that time waits for no boy band. This Friday, New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys bring the sugary-sweet soundtrack of your adolescence back to the Verizon Center's stage — and with it, a reminder of just how much has changed since you got your learner's permit. Whether you survived the late-'80s outbreak of NKOTB fever or succumbed to the late-'90s siren song of the Backstreet Boys, we have all the hot updates on America's favorite former future husbands.
BACKSTREET BOYS
» A.J. McLean
McLean checked into rehab in 2001 and 2002, and was treated for depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse, according to Rollingstone.com. He checked back in last year, saying he wanted to "be healthy and at my best" before the BSBNKOTB tour.
» Howie Dorough
Then
: The overlooked one
Now: The regular guy
» Brian Littrell
Then
: The one with highlights
Now: The Christian recording artist
» Nick Carter
When McLean checked into rehab in 2001, a choked-up Carter told MTV.com, "I don't think there is an end to this group until one of us dies." Carter has since dropped a solo album, "Now or Never," and starred in "House of Carters" on E! with younger brother, Aaron.

Nick Carter loves looking youthful

Nick Carter insists he looks younger than his friends because of his exciting childhood.

The 31-year-old is best known as one of the lead vocalists of pop group Backstreet Boys. Nick, who went on to release a solo album called Now Or Never during the band’s hiatus, says that despite doubting his music career during his younger years, he now appreciates the positive effect it had on his life.

"I used to have that feeling [of missing out on a childhood]. I used to live in the past, trying to figure out who I was. I regretted things. My friends went to high school and had their proms and everything, whereas I only came home for a short time and then had to fly off again. I used to be a kind of a roving soul,” he explained in an interview with German website unikosmos.de. “But when I look back I can see how happy I am. All my friends look older than me and are not as healthy as I am. Plus I am urban because I have travelled the world. I like my life."

Review: NKOTBSB tour comes to Mohegan Sun

By REBEKAH MEYER

Whoever came up with the concept for the NKOTBSB tour must have loved the musical Chicago.

“One jazz killer is nothing these days, but two …”

That was the idea behind the cleverly monikered NKOTBSB tour, and boy, was it a good one. Each band — New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys, for those keeping track — has been making few waves within the last few years, but put them together and you have a girls' night waiting to happen.

The headliners started very late — 44 minutes after the second opener finished. But once they came out, all was forgotten. They appeared, appropriately, high atop a riser, looking down at an expanse of cheering fans.
It was an expertly calibrated show: a nonstop, 2 hour-15 minute killer, with very little downtime between songs and almost no banter. Even the ‘encore’ began less than two minutes after the last song ended, and there was recorded noise going on in the background.
