New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys get screaming love from 7,000 women fans at Van Andel Arena

GRAND RAPIDS -- Somebody get a hose, because the 7,000-plus women gathered at the Van Andel Arena Thursday night were hot and bothered at the sight and sound of New Kids on the Block and The Backstreet Boys.

With an average age of about 35, the fans were clearly coming back in droves to see the boy bands whose faces they had plastered in their lockers and whose voices crooned to them at school dances and roller skating parties.

The screaming was like none other, a wall of sound that just intensified depending what was happening onstage, or who happened to be singing at that moment. Actor Donnie Wahlberg (“Blue Bloods”) of TV and movie fame seemed to get the most sugar out of the NKOTB; when he tugged off his tank top the whole place just about went up in flames. Joey McIntyre also fared well in the shrieking department, and fans dissolved when Jordan Knight showed off his still-supple falsetto on “Valentine Girl.”

The crowd went berserk, too, for classic New Kids tunes, such as “(You Got It) The Right Stuff” and “Summertime.” The latter was sung in the opening sequence, where the two bands sung it together, each group ascending on 15 foot high circular mini-stages on each end of the arena floor.

Both groups were incredibly high energy, even though it’s been a few years since they were “kids” and “boys.” Concertgoer Laura Hall said that she had seen NKOTB in 1990, and they were even more energetic and passionate now.

As for The Backstreet Boys — Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough — their sound is more polished pop while the New Kids have a more streetwise hip-hop flavor. Midway, BSB donned white sateen suits and sang in the most pleading tones the heart tugger “Incomplete.” Nick Carter especially sold it with his beseeching delivery. He definitely brings emotion to every song.

A lucky lady was brought up on stage, where the band kneeled at her feet and sang as she tried not to float away. It was this kind of wish-fulfillment that these guys do really well. I’ve rarely seen a band so interactive with the crowd, as each of the nine members of NKOTBSB waved, pointed, smiled, blew kisses etc, much to the delight of the audience.

Later in the show, both bands ventured into the adoring throngs, where they were pawed at quite shockingly. For their encores, the two groups had a fun sing-off, which the crowd loved. Heck, they could’ve sung anything, and these ladies (the ratio of women to men was about 1000: 10) would’ve dug it. With their voices as strong and bright as ever, and their dancing in top form, these two boy bands delivered a blockbuster show that left the crowd wanting more.

Ashlyne Huff

Wearing a glitzy leotard and backed by a bevy of dancers and a MD, newcomer Ashlyne Huff danced and sang her way through a short set of club-ready electronica. As a hot young female, she was an odd choice to warm up for two heartthrob boy bands. She has a pretty voice, but unfortunately, most people couldn’t get past the fact that she had no pants on.
